How often cortisone injections are given varies based on the reason for the injection. This is determined on a case-by-case basis by the health care practitioner. If a single cortisone injection is curative, then further injections are unnecessary. Sometimes, a series of injections might be necessary; for example, cortisone injections for a trigger finger may be given every three weeks, to a maximum of three times in one affected finger. In other instances, such as knee osteoarthritis, a second cortisone injection may be given approximately three months after the first injection, but the injections are not generally continued on a regular basis.
In these last few days, I squeezed the remaining amounts of Zanfel from a tube I bought several years ago. It worked to reduce the itching and rash from a local PI infection on my leg. Zanfel did the job for me twice before on local PI infections so I definitely got my money’s worth. However, when I bought it, I, like others here, winched at the price and nearly put it back on the shelf. Later on, when I read through the Zanfel patent online, I was planning to try mixing toothpaste with nonoxynol-9, maybe add a little Tide and sand. But I’m glad to hear that cheaper generic versions of Zanfel are now available. Seems like the various generic versions lack the nonoxynol-9, but it’s pretty easy to add that in, and see if it really makes such a difference. (PS: Thanks vauron for posting your experiment findings.)
I'm assuming that you clear it wearing long pants, long sleeved shirt and gloves. Use a product called Tecnu to wash yourself after you think you've come into contact w/ the poison ivy. I think you can also wash your clothes with it. This seems to work quite well. After you have some, put some bleach on it with a qtip- I'm not sure why it works, but in moderation, it seems to work quite well. If it gets really bad (my mother had it once such that her whole legs were covered and oozing), get a shot of hydrocortizone from the doctor. Naturally, this is not a remedy you want to revert to frequently.
